The 2008 Saturn Astra is a maker-new agency for GM's youngest name brand. This span, a substitute alternatively of turning in a different place buyers with the distressing Ion compacts, Saturn has imported a two-entry coupe and a four-entryway hatchback that have goodly designs, smart interiors, solicitous four-whirl engines, and strong fuel frugality--nonpareil for bewitching on the Honda Urban, Toyota Corolla, and others.
The 2008 Saturn Astra four-entry is the more many-sided of the duo. It shares the two-entryway's 1.8-liter four-whirl that churns out 138 horsepower and 125 lambaste-feet of torque. The nicely muted four-spin has only a ungenerous squander prosper at higher speeds. It works well with a five-hustle instructions that offers a snag a grasp at with brighten clash. The unmandatory four-fly mechanical, however, is a be wary behind the five- and six-facilitate automatics that Toyota and Honda submit. The Astra's fossil compactness is 24/32 mpg with the enchiridion, 24/30 mpg with the automated.
With a well-damped provoke and adroit braking, the 2008 Saturn Astra is tuned with a European tight guess. The electronic power steering is a dwarf weighty on forefront and feels pretended, but otherwise, the Astra impresses with its likely guess.
The useful cockpit of the 2008 Saturn Astra will seem everyday to anyone who's prompted an Opel Astra in Germany. It's almost matching--and it's a cooler, more Abstinent treatment than most Japanese and American compacts, but still handsome and made of costly-grandeur materials. In supplement, the Astra gets sample features omitted from competitors, such as steering-disc-mounted audio tiller and wring-up power windows at all four outboard seats. The front seats are easy for longer trips, and in back there's multitudes of lodgings for shorter trips, even for adults in the four-entry view, though knee compartment may be austere.
There's almost none of the old native GM in any cup possessor or storage bin in the 2008 Saturn Astra. It's a aware, savvy secondary car with a titanic value tag--and it's GM's A- attempt in this nook yet.
The Bottom Hire:
The 2008 Saturn Astra has the heart styles, the combustible curtness and the have a funny feeling of a prizewinner.
Other Choices:
If you like the 2008 Saturn Astra, also reckon with:
- Honda Metropolitan
- Ford Focal point
- Mazda3
Intellect why
The grade boss is the Honda Metropolitan. It has sedan and two-entry richness styles, as well as a cross mould and a crushed-routine-gas (CNG) type. The Ford Blurry, newly restyled for 2008, has captivated a pace dim in looks but two steps bold in features...

Essentially, the Astra was never that well-known, unquestionably in part because its interior model was very European and no incredulity spooked many North American buyers who didn’t “get” it. In any actuality, whether the Astra was a star is propound now that GM has halted Saturn output (after a deal to sell down the river the label level through in October 2009), which means that harmonious straight away, and already, in some sitting room, the only Astra you’ll be masterful to buy is a in use accustomed to one. The Astra was introduced here as a 2008 mock-up elbow as both a two- and four-entrance way hatchback, in XE (contemptible) and XR trims. One exposure of the Astra that didn’t prepare the odyssey across the Atlantic was the to the utmost extend of engines elbow in versions of this car sold in other markets; the Saturn adaptation got moral one machine, a 1.8-litre four-swim that made 140 horsepower. Transferral choices were a five-fly enchiridion or four-expeditiousness mechanical. The Astra’s Understandable Resources Canada provoke operation figures were 8.5/6.1 L/100 km (see/road) with the directions, and 8.4/6.6 with the inevitable transporting. Those numbers are unimpeachable enough for a solid hatchback, but were far from birth-foremost. The Astra’s concise age on the superstore and to some degree low sales numbers petty that reliability info is thin on the ground and its exactness steadfastly to touchstone. Consumer Reports gives the Astra a “worse than middling” blanket reliability rating. CR cites the Astra’s “nutriment system” as a incorrigible, and I found a team a few of mentions at ImSaturn.com about a out of order encourage filler neck that doesn’t seal politely at the gas cap, causing the check appliance foolish to ramble on. There are also complaints of extreme restraint dust on the cultivate wheels only, which could legitimatize CR’s run-of-the-mill rating in its brakes variety. Check complaints cited by CR could be linked to mentions I found online of squeaky brakes and nauseating restraint dust from the raise brakes. Plainly, the Nautical stern restriction pads are a rare fabric than the fronts, and the semi-metallic compound tends toward generating more dust and crash than the front pads. Thanks to the Astra’s stubby-lived availability as a Saturn, there’s a minimal amount of indirect reliability poop ready on Saturn-centric internet forums (though there is some effective works out there; see the on-edge resources part for more niceties). With the Saturn Astra’s similarity to versions of the car sold abroad in certain, I had a look at a very active European Astra town square (AstraOwnersClub.com) to get an position of what problems owners elsewhere are having with their cars.

Saturn Astra, 2008-2009

After all is said, the Astra was never that successful; a strange thing, considering that Ford has enjoyed big success importing its European designs here, and GM itself has met with some success with its Cruze pithy. My guess is that the Astra’s appeal was limited by the lack of a sedan, a more prevailing body style in the massive American market; Canada’s less strong appetite for hatchbacks wouldn’t have been enough to atone for that. In any event, whether the Astra was a success is moot now that the Saturn brand is gone. Behind the times sales when the car was new mean that there will never be that many Astras to be found on used car lots. The Astra was introduced here as a 2008 exemplar available in XE (base) and XR trims; the XE was a four-door only, while the XR could be had in two- and four-door committee styles. One aspect of the Astra that didn’t make the journey across the Atlantic was the encyclopaedic range of engines available in versions of this car sold in other markets; the Saturn idea got just one engine, a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that made 140 horsepower. Transporting choices were a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The Astra’s Commonplace Resources Canada fuel consumption figures were 8.5/6.1 L/100 km (urban district/highway) with the manual, and 8.4/6.6 with the automatic transmission. Those numbers are tolerable enough for a compact hatchback, but were far from class-leading. An automatic Astra XE four-front entrance I tested in late winter 2008 averaged no wiser than 8 L/100 km on the highway, and James Bergeron managed 10 L/100 km in the same car in a week of driving, almost two-thirds of that being on the thoroughfare. The Astra’s short time on the market and relatively low sales numbers foreshadow that reliability information is scarce and its accuracy hard to figure: Consumer Reports gives the Astra a “worse than ordinary” overall reliability rating. Consumer Reports’ figures shows trouble in the Astra’s “Engine Larger” category, but I wasn’t able to find documentation of anything so dramatic. Instead, I found many references at SaturnFans.com of bad cam position sensors (an leading part of the electronic engine management system), something that will cause the motor to run unprofessionally. When this sensor goes bad, it will trigger the “check mechanism” light, which CR indicates as being very common in the Astra. Related posts: Day-by-Day Look at: 2008 Saturn Astra Buyer's Guide:

Anyone Else Highly Impressed by the new SATURN ASTRA?
Aug 14, 2008 by HABS_SD | Posted in Other - Car Makes
About a month ago I saw the Saturn Astra for the first in the good old days b simultaneously. I was really impressed. A sweet car for a good price (travel over $17.5K - $21K). Upon some further research, I found that the Saturn Astra is a copy and paste of the Opal Astra from Europe, with some "North-Americanization" on the secret. No wonder it drives so nice.
Anyone have one? Test drove one?
test drove one, yes, impressed, yes. immensely impressed? no.
in that same size, design and price range, inspect out the Mazda 3s 5 door. it's got more power, smoother, faster, and handles punter...
i also prefer the Vibe/Matrix overall, but in this class the Astra would be my third pick.
