Porsche Cayman R: Less Weight, More Power, More Clutter
07.02.12
When you ambitiousness a Porsche, people talk about you behind your back. They call you unflattering names that aren’t seize for polite company, so I’ll just call them nouns for now. If you occur to be driving the Cayman R, the same people may feel the need to add an adjective. Hastily you’re a “big” such-and-such or a “flaming” whatever. If you’re ordinary to speed this may not matter. After all, the Cayman R has more power than the standard model or the turbulent-performance Cayman S and is faster. But the big silver wing on the back of my bright-downcast test car, and the racing stripe and “Porsche” graphics on its flanks gave it the look of a Hot Wheels toy. One sentiment I have long liked about Porsches is that as sports cars go, they take care of to be understated. Sure, there have been a few models with obnoxious flourishes, but for the most part, frame follows function on a Porsche chassis. One could argue this is true for the Cayman R because Porsche markets it as a sniff out car — the kind of machine in which the driver hones racing skills on a closed surely. The R’s athletic performance also seems to turn local streets into step lively courses. Its firm suspension was a bit harsh at times, but the R’s trifle-trigger acceleration and extremely sharp handling cut even everyday commuting into a contest worth winning. And that’s a proper thing because, really, who takes a car like this to a track? A sprinkling of buyers at best, I suspect. Even in the small subculture of hunt down-driving aficionados the idea of spending $66,300 for a car to thrash on without number hot laps is far-fetched. Tradition dictates that you find a tired old car with a blown appliance, or a stripped-down husk of a retired race car and rebuild it with a hot motor, race-tuned suspension and little else. Then you tow it to the track behind your pickup business. That’s how serious track people do it. If you want fun on the street the sample $51,900, 265-horsepower Cayman will do the trick, and the $62,100 Cayman S will do it better. Making the move to the Cayman R brings a sense of increased clutter and diminishing returns.

whats the difference between the porsche cayman and boxster??
Apr 11, 2007 by Bob46352 | Posted in Porsche
whats the argument between the porsche cayman and boxster?? Im talkin the non S type. I found that Cayman costs about 4000 more, but whats the diff between the two?
It depends on the year, in point of fact. Obviously, the Cayman is a coupe, the Boxster is a cabriolet. But prior to 2007, the Cayman S had a far upper engine to the Boxster S. Starting with this year's model, however, the Boxster S shares the Cayman S apparatus, and it has brought it into a whole new league. However, the Cayman still has the most torsional stiffness of any Porsche (it's a coupe that kept the Boxster's chassis forces), which -- along with that mid-engine -- means it is a real joy on the twisties.
I'm a 911 guy out of erudite and loyalty reasons; but I've read magazine reviews of the '07 Boxster that say it may now be the beat all-around Porsche available today. OK, forget the 997 Turbo. "Most suitable for the money," how's that? One article said, "the only senses to opt for a 997 cab instead is to flaunt your disposable wealth." Of advance, that's as good a reason as any to buy a Porsche. :)
