2013 Nissan 370Z Roadster Review and Road Test

While I’m not game to say after years of convertible cynicism that I am becoming a convert (that would be a tad hypocritical, no?) that last two I’ve prompted had really made me re-adjust my focus.

The first pox on the convertible quintessence, especially when the model in question started life out as a coupe, as this one did, is the styling. Unless you have a removable persistently-top, the roof has to be put somewhere when stowed which inevitably means a swollen fag-end end and a sacrificing of trunk space. Not here. You lose no trunk rank when the top is down, and from the side or rear three-quarter view, you’d never know there was a roof in there at all. Even the 370Z’s forebear, the 350Z, suffered in the looks department when the roof was lopped off.

It honestly is a good looking car, this Zed. It’s squat and compact, but maintains the hanker hood and stubby back end that all proper sports cars should have, and which I rather like—it reminds, literally, of that Z4 and that’s no small compliment.

Other than the proportions, it’s all about the small details; workings like the billeted vertical door handles which impersonate the new-for-2013 vertical LED daytime running lights, or the spectacular 19-inch Rays diminish wheels finished in a nice dark gunmental. The obscure wheel colour, meanwhile, helps accentuate the red brake calipers, which are also new for 2013 and along with those wheels and rollick-tuned shock absorbers, all part of a $4,000 Sport Encase. Those wheels really are the highlight, though. I don’t remember seeing works-installed rims that look this good in quite some period. Awesome.

Inside, nothing much has changes since last year, which is fine because Nissan models in broad have a penchant for some very high-quality interiors whose solidity and use of abate-touch, high-quality materials is a staple—well-grounded have a seat in the new Maxima  sedan or Murano crossover to see what I low. All the panel gaps are tight, the leather high-prominence and the steering wheel chunky and easy to grip—these are all hallmarks of a appropriately engineered interior and kudos are definitely in order.

The Zed takes it an surplus mile by adding a very race-car like three-gauge band (the individually-hooded gauges display your oil temp, mobile charge and clock) mounted on the upper dash, neutral to the right of the steering wheel. There’s just something about sitting low in the headquarters and looking at them staring back at you in all their orange-lit glory (also very BMW -like, that) that suggests that you had most beneficent buckle upper for a fun ride.
