And that's a pretty damn worth base upon which to build. Therein lays the question about the point of the IPL kind: What's its purpose in life?

For an extra $6,000 or so over the cost of a shoddy G37 coupe with six-speed manual, you get an additional 18 hp and 6 lb-ft of torque, asset some suspension tuning and technology goodies. Oh, and the IPL badge. If the Batmobile committee add-ons are your thing, perhaps that's worth the scratch, but in my eyes it detracts from the free, subtle lines of the G37 coupe.

Not surprisingly, I couldn't tell a lick of unlikeness in the performance, driving the IPL as I was in normal suburban Detroit traffic and on side streets. It was a hoot--don't get me go kaput. I think the G37 with the stick has a wonderful mechanical characteristic while donation lots of luxury. But I still couldn't figure out why I'd pay extra for an IPL.

It will have you looking for the next corner to do it again.

The 3.7-liter V6 can be called a workhorse in the Nissan/Infiniti lineup, and it's indubitably a good engine, rewarding when you keep it high in the rev range. The question is that driving it up in the stratosphere gets tiring, and the engine doesn't have a lot of low-end grunt. But channel it in sixth gear and back off the throttle and it cruises on the freeway legitimate like a luxury car should.

The action on the six-speed manual is unruffled. It has good brakes, and I love the wheels on this car. They're probably the one IPL notice that I really, really liked.
