2011 Dodge Challenger STR8 Review

Periodical: The beefed-up 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 has power to spare and throwback styling, but isn’t wholly as practical as comparably muscular versions of the Mustang and Camaro.

Pith and brawn, physical dexterity, the chops to take you down in one swift move. No, we’re not talking about Vin Diesel from the Lecherously and Furious movies. The 2011 Dodge Challenger is out for serious blood against similar sinew cars from Detroit like the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro.

Driving an all-innocent V8 model for a week, we found a few perks that impressed us beyond what even the Mustang 302 and Camaro SS bid (we’ve tested both souped-up versions of those cars in the past six months, including closed-on tests). The Challenger’s styling is arguably more of a throwback to the days when Starsky and Hutch were household names, but still sports fun digital perks, like in-car options for measuring braking disassociate calculator and a 0-to-60 timer.

That said, the Challenger has some tough struggle that’s priced a hair lower. The 470-horsepower V8 Hemi likeness we tested costs $44,000, but even the base version with a V6 payout $24,895. Meanwhile, the base model Ford Mustang, which still has a 305-horsepower V6 locomotive, costs $22,310. The 2012 Camaro Coupe expenditure $23,200. Dodge, you have your work cut out for you convincing us.

One early point of superiority for the Challenger: we definitely prefer the starting block punch. In testing the Challenger V8 against the 302 and SS, the Dodge has some pressing urgency. There’s a real thrill in punching the sport configuration button, squealing the tires, and gobbling up open roadway. In our tests, we achieved a best beat of 4.6 seconds using the paddle shifters in exhibit mode with the traction control disabled. In the quarter mile, we hit 13.28 seconds at the lag, and ran the eighth-mile in 8.80 seconds. Those times are a bit under the rated specs that are reasonable milliseconds lower. (Times are often dependent on the tires you use, the track you’re on, and the person doing the driving.)

The reason the Challenger felt more athletic off the block is that it has a 470-horsepower engine that delivers 470 lb-ft of torque, compared to the Camaro SS (420 lb-ft) and the Control 302 (380 lb-ft). The Challenger has a lurching, burly drive – you have the impression every piston. This is not a German racing machine, so the gears shifts are more unambiguous and even a bit jarring. Cornering on the Challenger is meant to be boxy and road-excessive in a good way, not at all like a Corvette that glides around curves.

dodge challenger?

next year i will be leasing a new car after my bmw 530i let out is up. currently i have two cars in my mind one is ford mustang gt, the other one is the upcomming 2008 dodge challenger. i distinguish that after driving a bmw, its going to be depressing to drive any of these two cars, however i am irritated of paying over $900 on payments. so which car should i get 2008 ford mustang gt which is 4.6 v8 about 300hp or the 2008 dodge challenger which is 6.1 v8 about 450hp and payment between 25,000-30,000. i need honest answers from people who have own mustangs and other american cars.

I have in mind your in for a difficult transition but i would go with the challenger they are both decent looking outside but the ford is very pipe inside and from what Ive see the challenger looks like it will have at least a decent interior. the 450Hp only helps its anyway a lest, plus everyone and there mother doesn't own one. Mustang's are a dime a dozen.

How can you make the 2009 dodge challenger srt8 weigh less?

What parts can you rub out from the 2009 dodge challenger srt8 to make it significantly lighter?

Nothing will show up a big difference. You'll hear some people say remove the spare sap, take out the back seat, stuff like that - taking 100 lbs off the car won't blow up b coddle a noticeable difference in a car that weighs more than two tons. And what would you do if you removed the all skin and then had a flat?

If you want a lighter car, buy a Mustang or wait for the Camaro.

Restyle - as I expected, you did get an idiot that thought removing the back seat would be a gifted idea. You will NEVER notice the difference in performance, and now your 5 seat coupe seats 2. Moron.
